Big Love Festival. 18th-21st July 2024. Usk, South Wales.

Kids’ Activities

We’ve really gone to town with activities and workshops for children and families for 2024! Most activities take place in our brand new Cariad Bach area. This is just a selection of things on offer this year.

DJ Academy

With DJ Killer Tom (GLC)

DJ lesson.

For children and teenagers (10–17 years), we present the new Big Love DJ Academy, with professional touring DJ and educator Killer Tom (Goldie Lookin’ Chain).

With sessions on Friday and Sunday, participants will get to learn essential DJing skills in small groups, with plenty of time to practice on the CDJs. Kids are encouraged to bring their favourite tunes on a USB stick.

Finally, all participants will be invited to play a short DJ set to help close the festival on Sunday!

The DJ Academy is free, but please register your interest now for further details.

Aerial Workshops

Aerial stage.

Join our epic ‘give-it-a-whirl’ aerial workshops for a thrilling spin to start your festival weekend! Dive into an hour-long aerial session where we will teach hoop and silks. These sessions will include a warm up and cool down.

Sessions for children aged 7–11, 11–16, and 16+. We recommend registering your interest in advance as places are strictly limited.

Graffiti Art Workshop

With Spike Clark

Spike is an artist who specialises in creating large-scale works using spray paint, and is regularly commissioned to produce works around the UK and Europe. His work has graced the Museum of London and more. He’ll be on hand to help children and teenagers try their hands at some large spray can art at these drop-in afternoon sessions.

For safety (and to protect clothing), all spray paints will be water-based. See more of Spike’s work at his website Fat Cap and on Instagram.

The Sparklettes Hula Hoop Workshop

Looking for a new party trick? Join The Sparklettes on Saturday morning for a Hula Hoop Workshop and learn all the skills you need to become a hula hero.

The Twig Cinema

Help us create a giant picture over the course of the weekend, using found items from around the site and woods. This group project will be filmed continuously as the picture grows, and by the end there will be a stop-motion video showing the process from start to finish. A lovely way for families to participate and have something to take away.

Supersonic Sparklette Family Rave

Blow the cobwebs (or hangovers 😉) away and join The Sparklettes and The Lovely Phoenix for a Supersonic Sparklette family rave. Wear your festival sequins, your sparkly unitards, your glittery hats and come and boogie to some old school rave bangers and start the last day of the festival with a bang!

Pop-Up Pom Pom Picnic

With Radical Kindness

Join the Pom Pom People on Saturday and create your very own magical pom poms and share some joy and kindness. Then celebrate your colourful creations in the Big Love Parade on Sunday!

Please note to conserve the magical powers of the pom poms, the picnics are small groups at a time. Age guide: 6+ years old and young at heart. (children must be accompanied by an adult)

The Pom Pom People are community focused, magical daydreamers sharing Radical Kindness through craftivism, walkabouts and pop-up workshops created by Naz Syed, Ziba Creative.

Clay Critters Craft Workshop

Led by Emma McAndrew D’Souza and friends

Use the technique of pinch pottery to craft tiny animal friends!

There will be terracotta clay to sculpt with, alongside a mini garden clay museum to discover. We will explore clay’s journey from underground slime to rock hard ceramic!

We won’t be firing pieces at the festival but we’ll give you tips for getting your creations home to fire with a local pottery… or you can keep them as air dry!

The Big Love Olympics

Egg and spoon race.

Join in the silly sports day, featuring Human Hungry Hippos,  Tails, Baby Racing and Egg & Spoon Race.

Awen Project

Education charity showcase

The Awen Project is a children’s education charity, who Big Love are pleased to support as part of our community outreach activities. This year some of the young people from the project will be attending Big Love to tell us more about what makes the charity’s work both original and vital. They will be screening a creative performance piece that they have been developing in the Big Top at 6pm on Saturday. Learn more about Awen Project here.

At the end of the session there will always be a freestyle circle for any to join and show off their moves if they feel like it.
