Big Love has teamed up with influential East African music and arts festival Nyege Nyege for a groundbreaking new creative project!

‘Mapenzi Makubwa’ (Big Love in Swahili) is an exchange of artists, ideas and skills between Big Love in the UK and Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Festival.

Now in its 9th edition, Nyege Nyege is an annual showcase festival of cutting edge contemporary African arts and music, with space for experimentation and community building. The team run also run a record label in Kampala, and additional training programmes in music journalism, stage management and event production.

It’s been a long time in the making and strictly hush-hush, under wraps for a while, but we can finally reveal that a team of Big Love Festival creatives have just flown out to Uganda to exchange ideas and expertise with Nyege Nyege.

The team will collaborate with the local build team and help them push the boundaries of stage design and decoration, with the goal of training and inspiring local creatives and craftspeople to build a more visually stunning event and leave a lasting practical legacy.

Beautiful young black woman at the festival.

We’ll also be hooking up with BBC DJ Jamz Supernova, who’ll be performing a full-on Saturday night set on the stage our team will be decorating.

In return, we will be hosting some of their hand-picked Ugandan artists – both visual and musical – at Big Love 2025, helping to bring a genuine taste of contemporary East African culture to Wales!

Keep an eye on all of our socials over the coming weeks as we share more from our team’s amazing journey and experiences with you all.

Huge thanks to the British Council and British Council Uganda for all their hard work and amazing support to make this project possible! X
